Help Ban Plastic Bags in LA County- Sign A Petition To Urge the Supervisors To Take Action!

CoejlSC and Heal the Bay seek your help in persuading the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to take immediate action on a staff-proposed plastic carryout bag ban. Sign the petition today!

The L.A. County Board of Supervisors has indefinitely postponed consideration of a staff report (PDF:613KB) that makes strong policy recommendations to significantly reduce or eliminate plastic-bag litter throughout the county. The discussion of the recommendations was pulled from public meeting agendas in order to receive more input from stakeholder groups.

However, a wide variety of interested parties, including plastics and grocery associations, participated in the drafting of the staff report. Months of considerable research, analysis and stakeholder input led to clear-headed proposals to either implement an outright ban or a phased ban if recycling proves unsuccessful. Additional study will only impede much-needed action.

Now is the time for the public’s voice to be heard! Please let the Board know the importance of this issue by signing the petition urging them to schedule the recommendations for prompt public discussion.

In addition, Heal the Bay and 25 other concerned groups, representing hundreds of thousands of members, sent a letter to the board requesting  that residents be given an opportunity to comment publicly without delay.

The L.A. County Board of Supervisors can show their ongoing commitment to the environment by joining other progressive municipalities and nations in banning the bag. Officials in San Francisco, Paris, and even Modbury in Britain have recently adopted comprehensive bans. South Africa, Ireland and Bangladesh are among the nations that have agreed to eliminate or heavily tax plastic shopping bags. Los Angeles county should be next.
